2015 Annual Report
[h4_heading]Fort Monroe Authority Mission[/h4_heading]
The Fort Monroe Authority (FMA) is a political subdivision of the Commonwealth of Virginia, created to preserve, protect, and manage Fort Monroe and Old Point Comfort after the federal Base Realignment and Closure Commission (BRAC) closure in September 2011. The Authority is governed by a 12-member Board of Trustees.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1464375176991{padding-top: 30px !important;padding-bottom: 45px !important;}”][h4_heading]From the Chairman and Executive Director[/h4_heading]
2015 proved to be a monumental year for the Fort Monroe Authority (FMA) and the Fort Monroe Foundation. Of all the events that occurred on the property, nothing surpassed the excitement and enthusiasm of transferring approximately
120 acres from the Commonwealth of Virginia to the National Park Service (NPS).
Designated a National Monument by President Barack Obama on November 1, 2011, the past four years focused on securing the property from the Army and developing the working documents to make this transfer a reality. Now the National Park Service is a land owner at Fort Monroe!
The partnership arrangement between the Fort Monroe Authority and the National Park Service allows programming on the site and interpretation of the historic features of the property to achieve new levels of success. The historic structures investigation is moving forward on key elements of the fortress, joint FMA-NPS interpretive programs continue to grow, and shared management of the infrastructure has reduced expenses to the FMA. Working together, the partnership presents the Fort Monroe property to the general public as a seamless operation.
Special events continue to bring thousands of people to Fort Monroe to be entertained as well as educated about the history of the property. The Casemate Museum is successfully managing the exhibits and receiving new artifacts that have never before been presented at the fort. Residential leasing maintains high levels of occupancy and commercial leasing welcomed new tenants to the property.
Another exciting event occurred this year when the Department of Historic Resources replaced the historic marker at Fort Monroe, clarifying that it was at this site, in August 1619, that the first Africans arrived in English North America. As the Fort Monroe Authority looks to the future, we recognize that the 400 Year Commemoration of the Arrival of the First Africans to Old Point Comfort is less than four years away. The trustees as well as the staff are committed to the success of this event and we are working collaboratively with the state, the City of Hampton, National Park Service, and other stakeholders for the planning of this historic moment in time.
As Fort Monroe continues to grow and the National Park Service expands its presence at Old Point Comfort, we invite you to come experience the excitement. We believe you will long remember your visit to this historic site in Coastal Virginia.

We extend special thanks to all of our generous donors. We appreciate your partnering with us since we began this journey in 2011 and hope this will be a long-term relationship. Your support helped us to continue to preserve and protect the legacy that is Fort Monroe.
